I've got a Seagate Barracuda 250GB SATA hard drive and some Samsung DVD burner that no longer appears on their website (though the manual is still available for download). The order is not important(master, slave) and as long anytime all HDD are bellow DVD in the case, it is natural to put DVD-Master and the HDD-Slave (but here is your I booted from the Vista install disk, created and formatted a new partition, and now the installation goes fine and hangs at completing installation. took out my Visiontek RadeonX1300 on the agp put in a old Radeon 8500 LE Vista installed without a hitch. I have the same Inspiron 1720 and disabling AHCI worked perfectly!
