well 6 hours later it's still the same!!!! The combination of the the two updates recommended here, and the "Windows Update Diagnostic" finally allowed me to run the normal automatic Windows Update. I'll definitely say that Windows will get easier to use as you use it more, like all things. A Control Panel window will open.
